About
About Hachi
Hachi is an app for iPhone and Android that teaches Iraqi Arabic: the dialect people speak at home, at work and on the street in Iraq.
What Hachi is
Hachi teaches the words and phrases Iraqis use every day, from greetings and small talk to idioms and slang. It has short lessons, audio for the words, quizzes, call-and-response practice, a built-in dictionary and short reads on Iraqi culture. Each phrase comes with a note on when and how it is used.
Some of the word audio was made with text-to-speech. We are replacing it with professional recordings, a batch at a time.
Why Iraqi Arabic
Most Arabic courses teach Modern Standard Arabic (Fusha), the Arabic of news and books. Nobody speaks it at home in Baghdad. Iraqi Arabic has its own words, its own sounds (such as چ and گ) and its own way of saying things, so learners who only know Fusha often can't follow a family conversation.
Hachi is for people who want to speak with Iraqis: heritage learners keeping in touch with family, partners and friends of Iraqis, and people who travel to Iraq. There are few good resources for the dialect, and Hachi is our attempt to add one.
Who makes Hachi
Hachi is made by a small team at Z Technologies Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 16069930). The guides on the Hachi blog are written by the same team.
